Wednesday, November 3 - Business Meeting and Program: Katherine Knauer: Tampering with Tradition: - this Powerpoint lecture explores how the artist finds inspiration in traditional quilt patterns, historic embroideries and other textiles and uses them as the basic building blocks of her very contemporary, often humorous work. Described as a mirthful approach to the macabre" and "cheerfully apocalyptic", Katherine’s quilts are comments on current events presented within a framework of traditional technique. The juxtaposition of subject matter dealing with war and environmental degradation and a medium most often associated with comfort and warmth energizes her work and gives it a unique perspective.
Katherine Knauer’s work has been included in numerous venues including two solo exhibitions and Quilt National (seven quilts in six different years). She is the author of Stencil Printing on Fabric which was published in American Quilter in 1993. Ms. Knauer uses quite a variety of techniques and continually adds new techniques to her repertoire.

Thursday, August 5 - Barbara ArnoldSashiko Workshop: Explore the beauty of this simple but challenging quilting stitch. All skill levels. Hand sewing
Location: Southold, Peconic Rec. Center, 9 AM - 3 PM
Traditional Sashiko has a very different back than our traditional hand quilting stitch. Knots and jump stitches are common on the back or underside of Sashiko. Even so, the back or underside of your quilted item needs to be neat. If you are curious about how this looks see one of my samples. Many quilters still bury their knots and travel stitches. Either way is fine.
